This 7 days, we had the preference of a few new eating places all around Sts Thomas’ Sq. in Newport on your own. It was Italian cafe Toto that drew us in.
We were welcomed by a common experience, which underlined the point that Toto is from the similar secure as the profitable Olivo and its more recent cousins, Ryde’s Fumo33 and Cibo in Wootton: each of which we are satisfied to propose.
We shared our bruschetta starter (key graphic adbove), which was conveniently big adequate for two. A broad slab of sourdough pizza bread was expertly laden with drizzles of flavoursome Genovese pesto, a sparky tomato salsa and some sprigs of peppery rocket. Fiori di latte — cheese curd to the likes of you — furthermore the oils in the pesto, kept the dough shiny and succulent. There was a great deal to share and, at 4 quid, this dish was great value far too.
Matt finds it tough to resist a calzone pizza, and didn’t. The calzone bianca at Toto was laden with a steaming incredibly hot cargo of nduja, broccoli, ricotta and mushroom. Matt ripped it open up eagerly, the delectable nduja scent soaring. This was a excellent combo, with the spicy sausage meat mixing pleasingly with the mellow ricotta.
Matt’s calzone.
Providing the bowl of gnocchi to Cat, the waiter admired her bravery in ordering what, regardless of its seemingly modest dimension, was truly a sizeable meal. The tender dumplings had been slathered with creamy wild truffle sauce which married nicely with the sour notes of the parmesan shavings, pimped with excess rooster and tenderstem broccoli customising this gnocchi deal with. Even with desperately wanting to end this splendid dish, Cat observed herself defeated in the conclude and actually still left some of the delightful parmesan-laden gnocchi to Matt, which he relished.
Cat’s gnocchi.
With both equally of us very effectively fed by our very first programs, we experienced to forgo a dessert. A shame, as Cat would unquestionably have purchased the ten-inch Nutella pizza for pudding. So that will have to wait around until eventually subsequent time.
We were delighted with the new Toto. It is going to be tough not to compare it with Olivo, and even though it does not have the menu scope, it does have the similar welcoming, casual experience and fulfilling, sizeable foodstuff with some great Mediterranean flavours. A terrific addition to the Island’s meals scene.
