What is Acute Angle? - Definition, Facts & Example

An angle is formed at the point of intersection of two lines. The point of intersection is called vertex where two lines or rays meet and the angle is formed in between the two lines. Any such angle formed is measured in degrees. The measurement of angle can be anything between zero degrees to 360 degrees. These angles have different names depending on their measurement values.

When an angle formed by two rays has a measure of fewer than 90 degrees, then the angle is called an acute angle. This means any angle between zero degrees and 90 degrees is called an acute angle.  If the sum of two angles is less than 180 degrees, then any one of these two angles will be an acute angle. For example, 30 degrees, 45 degrees, 72 degrees, 89 degrees are all acute angles.

Identification of Acute Angles

The two lines that form an acute angle are not perpendicular to each other. An acute angle is less than 90 degrees means the sum of two acute angles is always less than 180 degrees. Therefore two rays that form an acute angle will never be along the same straight line.

The geometrical shapes such as triangles, parallelograms, and polygons have at least one acute angle. A triangle has more than one acute angle. In a right angle triangle, one angle is 90 degrees and each of the other two angles is acute because the sum of these two angles will always be equal to 90 degrees.

Acute Angles in Real Life

In our day-to-day life, we can find examples of acute angles. A very common example of an acute angle can be found in a wall clock. The hour and minute hands of a clock form acute angles at different times in a day. For example, if we consider the time at 3.10 pm, the angle made by the hour hand and the minute hand is an acute angle. Similarly, when we slice a pizza into more than four equal slices, each slice of pizza makes an acute angle.

Acute Triangle

A triangle that has all the angles as acute angles is called an acute triangle. For example, an equilateral triangle is an acute triangle as all three angles measure 60 degrees. The properties of an acute triangle are as follows:

  • All the interior angles of an acute triangle are less than 90 degrees.
  • In an acute triangle, the line constructed from the base to the opposite vertex is perpendicular to the base.
  • The longest side of an acute triangle is opposite to the highest angle.
  • Examples of acute triangles are equilateral, isosceles, or scalene triangles.
